The initial state of the painting showed significant surface grime and a darkened varnish layer, which obscured finer details, particularly in Menalipe's facial features, helmet, and the shield. The accumulated dirt and aged varnish also caused the colors to appear muted and uneven. The restoration team carefully removed this layer of varnish, revealing a brighter palette and enhanced clarity across the painting.
Several areas, particularly around the helmet's intricate designs, Menalipe's facial features, and the lower left corner of the shield, suffered from pigment loss and fading. The restoration process included delicate retouching to reintegrate these areas cohesively with the original work. The conservators used conservation-grade pigments to match the original palette, ensuring that retouching would be seamless.
The inscription "MENALIPE AMAZZON" at the top of the painting had faded, with portions of the text barely visible. Following careful cleaning and retouching, the inscription is now more readable, providing context and adding to the painting's historical narrative. Improvements Noted: Legibility of Text: The letters in the inscription have gained clarity, adding an essential contextual element that enriches the viewer's understanding of the painting's subject matter.
