Description of Frame and Back Side
From the front, the painting is set in a gilt frame with a decorative, 19th‐century style molding. However, the rear view reveals a more modern approach to mounting and support. Rather than simply resting within a traditional frame rabbet, the canvas is now attached to a newly constructed pine stretcher, which is itself fitted into a larger wooden panel or backing board.

Restoration
Upon its purchase in 2024, the painting exhibited significant signs of age, surface grime, and structural wear, as shown in the attached photographs of the artwork in its older, simpler frame. Consolidation and Stabilization of Paint Layer
After cleaning, the restorer addressed minor paint flaking and areas of craquelure that risked further loss: Flaking Edges and Gaps: A conservation‐grade adhesive was introduced under any slightly lifted paint edges, and gentle pressure was applied with a heated spatula (protected by silicone release film) to readhere them to the ground. Iconographic and Emotional Content
The Penitent Magdalene theme is traditionally associated with introspection, repentance, and a transition from worldly to spiritual focus. Artists often accentuate these qualities by depicting Magdalene with an upward gaze, partially exposed shoulders (signifying a past of sensuality or vanity), and clasped hands that imply contrition or prayer. Emotional Resonance: The painting conveys a gentle, subdued pathos rather than an intense dramatic fervor.
